Responding to requests to hold a family-friendly dance that won’t keep children up past their bedtime, Hands Four Dancers of Ithaca is hosting its first-ever easy-going afternoon contra dance. This event will be accessible to newcomers and still abundantly pleasing for experienced dancers. The O'Shanigans, featuring Derrick Doty on fiddle, Craig McMeekin on guitar, and Michael Ludgate on mandolin, will play tunes from New England, Southern Appalachia, Canada, Ireland, Scotland, England, and beyond. Leading the dances will be veteran caller David Smukler from Syracuse, author of Cracking Chestnuts and former board member of the Country Dance and Song Society, of which Hands Four is an affiliate. David is known far and wide for his clear teaching style and his wide repertoire of interesting dances. Beginners of all ages are always welcome; each dance is briefly taught and the steps are simple. No need to bring a partner, but please bring clean, soft-soled shoes.
