ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The New York State Bar Association will kick off a campaign this week in support of a constitutional convention.

New York voters will decide on Nov. 7 whether to authorize a convention that could propose changes to the state Constitution. The state lawyers' group is one of many organizations making arguments on both sides of the issue.

The bar association will launch a campaign Tuesday arguing that a convention could lead to fewer barriers to voter participation and more protections for the rights of New Yorkers.

Some critics claim a convention would be a boondoggle that benefits corrupt Albany insiders and big money interests.

Among the dozens of groups opposing a convention are New York State United Teachers and the New York Civil Liberties Union.
