Earlier this year, the Geneva Neighborhood Resource Center hired a new bilingual engagement coordinator. Jessica Avila provides support to the city’s eleven neighborhood associations in a variety of areas, but especially in outreach to the City’s Spanish-speaking population. It’s a need that Avila herself has seen become apparent.

Geneva Historical Society

The Town of Waterloo, NY is well-known for its commemoration of Memorial Day. On this annual observation of the holiday, we invited John Marks of the Geneva Historical Society to share a story of past observances of the holiday in Geneva.

Hobart and William Smith Colleges

Hobart and William Smith Colleges held their commencements on Sunday. This year’s speaker was former President Bill Clinton. But, much of the morning’s ceremony celebrated outgoing President of the Colleges Mark Gearan. Board of Trustees Chair Thomas Bozzuto praised the success and growth of the Colleges under Gearan’s leadership before announcing an honor unprecedented in the history of the institutions.

The City and the Town of Geneva are seeking comments from the public on a draft Active Transportation Plan. The draft is the result of several years work by a committee made up of  stakeholders from the City and the Town. State grant money was available to study ways to promote walking and bicycling in Geneva including infrastructure improvements.

More than one group gathered in athletic gear on the Geneva lakefront this past weekend. Saturday morning, a local grassroots group held a walk-a-thon to support area families. Mothers & Others is in its fifth year of gathering essential items for area women and children in need. The group’s founder, Antje Leo, was inspired by a story she read online.

The Kate Weare Company began their residency at Hobart and William Smith Colleges last Friday. I visited the dancer and choreographer Sunday afternoon as she was working with two of her dancers in advance of an open rehearsal that evening.

The company’s residency gives them an opportunity to explore their own work. The residency at the Colleges also bring the company into the classroom.

Geneva 2020

Geneva 2020 issued a Community Report at a breakfast Thursday morning. Geneva 2020 is a coalition of local businesses, nonprofits and individuals working to support city schools. It was formed in 2011 when Hobart and William Smith Colleges President Mark Gearan gathered a group to address challenges facing the district, which was under a New York State watch. At that time as many as one in four students were not graduating. Superintendent Trina Newton said that significant progress has been made toward a goal of 90 percent, with much work yet to be done.

Demonstrators returned to Congressman Tom Reed’s downtown Geneva office Wednesday. The gathering was a part of observations of International Women’s Day. Local organizers called their event the March 8th Women’s Assembly. Similar gatherings around the country were described as a Women’s Strike. Hannah Dickinson says organizers raised funds to support people who might have to take time off without pay to attend.

Across the country, organizers are planning events in recognition of International Women’s Day this Wednesday, March 8th. A national movement to organize a A Day Without a Woman grew out of the Women’s March on Washington in January. Those events drew hundreds of thousands of people to DC and to cities throughout the United States including Seneca Falls. That inspired organizers including Hannah Dickinson in Geneva.

Last Tuesday afternoon, hundreds of people gathered on Exchange Street in downtown Geneva to demonstrate their opposition to a variety of Trump administration policies and appointments as well as Congressman Tom Reed’s support of them. The large turnout inspired organizers, including Brien Ashdown, to return to Reed’s office again this today. The demonstrations are growing to include other communities Reed represents.
